Ostrich Eggshell Jewellery

Ostrich eggshell is one of nature’s most remarkable materials. With its beautiful ivory tones and surprisingly strong structure, it has been transformed into decorative beads and jewellery for thousands of years. Today, skilled artisans continue this ancient tradition, creating distinctive jewellery that celebrates natural beauty and traditional craftsmanship.

Although an ostrich egg may appear delicate, its shell is exceptionally thick compared with that of most other birds. It is a waste material once the chicks have hatched, a natural by-product. It is carefully cleaned, cut and shaped, the shell is then sanded and polished to reveal a smooth, subtle lustre. Each piece has its own natural character, making ostrich eggshell jewellery a unique alternative to conventional materials.

Ostrich eggshell beads have a fascinating history, with archaeological discoveries across Africa revealing their use in personal adornment and trade thousands of years ago. These beads were more than decorative objects; they played a role in connecting communities through trade. Today, this heritage continues through artisans who combine traditional techniques with contemporary designs.

World Design is inspired by materials that bring together natural beauty, cultural heritage and considered craftsmanship. Ostrich eggshell offers exactly that combination. Its understated elegance, distinctive texture and versatility make it ideal for jewellery that feels both timeless and contemporary.

We have worked with our partner project, Mambu Designs in South Africa, for more than 20 years. They employ over 25 artisans on the outskirts of Johannesburg and visiting them always feels like calling in on a big family. They hand paint the eggshell, enhancing its natural beauty.

The result is jewellery with a story to tell — a connection to nature, a rich history of human creativity and a wonderful project to support.
